Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)
Yes. The Knox City Council Planning Scheme, from September 2025 onward, says that it will be mandatory to have planning permission for canopy tree removal in residential areas under Clause 52.37 (Canopy Tree Protection). Such permits are required for trees or canopies higher than 500 centimetres, having a trunk diameter larger than 50 cm at a height of 1.4 metres from the ground level, and a canopy width of 4 metres or more. Other criteria include floral species on street frontage and rear boundaries, and vegetative or environmental overlays.
While most of Lysterfield is located within Knox City Council, some portions of this suburb belong to Yarra Ranges Shire. Your particular property is controlled by this council and therefore has different permit requirements. Both councils impose Clause 52.37 and a vegetation protection overlay on your property.
If you're unsure which council area your property falls in, our team can help confirm this during a free site visit, or you can check your property certificate and the VicPlan mapping tool online.
Tree pruning concentrates on the health and structural integrity of the foliage - removing branches that are dead, diseased, crossing, or placing excessive load on the canopy to improve its long-term wellbeing and reduce storm risk. Tree trimming is a broader maintenance task aimed at managing size and shape - keeping growth tidy and away from structures, power lines, and neighbouring properties. Both are valuable, and our arborists can recommend the right approach for your specific plants during a free on-site assessment.
Stump grinding uses specialised machinery to grind the stump below ground level - typically to a depth of 150 to 300 mm - leaving behind wood chip material in the void. This is the most efficient and cost-effective option for most situations, and the area can usually be turfed or replanted once the organic material breaks down. Full stump removal, which extracts the stump and major root ball entirely, is better suited to situations where you're planning to lay concrete, pave, or build over the area. We'll recommend the appropriate option after seeing the stump and understanding your plans for the space.
It can. Under Clause 52.37, a planning permit may be required not only for removal but also for lopping - particularly where the work would significantly reduce the height or canopy spread of a protected tree. If your property is within a vegetation or environmental overlay, additional approval requirements are likely to apply. Our team will confirm what's needed for your specific property before any work is recommended.
Knox City Council requires supporting documentation - including a written statement from a suitably qualified arborist - when applying to remove or lop a tree, particularly where health or structural concerns are cited as the reason. If your proposed works involve vegetation near overlays or boundary setbacks, a more detailed Level 5 arborist report prepared in accordance with AS 4970-2009 may be required. NS Tree Removals has certified arborists who prepare council-ready reports for Knox City Council and Yarra Ranges Shire applications.
The cost is determined by several criteria, such as the size and type of the woody plant, location of the vegetation on the plot, accessibility to the area, the inclusion of stump grinding or tree removal, and the need for a permit before starting work. We do not provide approximate estimates that can differ from the real cost of your project. Instead, we visit your site for free, examine or assess the work's location in detail. Later, after the free assessment, we will offer you an exact quotation for the work to get started.
